My Morning Ritual

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved mornings. There is just something special about waking up feeling refreshed and getting the opportunity to start a new day. I love being able to treasure that feeling of renewal, and for me, mornings are when I feel the most inspired. But that could just be the third cup of coffee talking.

From a young age, I established a morning routine, and it was the exact same every single day. I loved having that time to prepare for the day and be with myself. To me there was no better way to start my day than with my morning ritual, but as I have gotten older and busier my morning ritual is often cut short or cut out completely. To recapture my love for mornings, one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2015 has been to re-establish my own morning ritual as a priority.

The first part of my ritual, before even getting out of bed, is to set an intention for the day. I picked this practice up from a yoga teacher I had. She always told us to set an intention for our practice, and throughout the class, she would explain how important it was to live our lives with purpose and intention. This idea resonated with me and has extended well beyond my yoga mat. I have found that when I get busy it is easy for me to slip into mindless behaviors and to just flow through the days without giving much thought to the consequences of what I am doing. To help myself find meaning and purpose in each day, I set an intention that is often as simple as making sure to stay positive about a project but sometimes bigger like making sure to appreciate all the little blessings in my life. Whatever my intention is it becomes my guiding mantra for the day, and truly does help to keep me positive and focused.

Then it is straight to coffee - easily my favorite part of the morning and sometimes even the whole day… I love coffee probably more than I should, but I like to make sure that my morning cup(s) are a special experience. I like to soak in every aspect- from the warmth of the cup in my hands to the smell of the splash of vanilla soy milk I pour in. I treasure these little moments of predictable joy.

I also make my bed every single morning. Always. There is something simply wonderful about at the end of a long, exhausting day about getting into a pristinely made bed. It is one of those moments of luxury that can make you forget about the chaos of the day. That little moment of revitalization brings me so much joy and gives me something I know that I can always look forward to at the end of the day.

My morning ritual helps me to appreciate my days more because of the time I take for myself. I take the time to pause, think about all the blessings that surround me, and enjoy the quiet time of the morning. Since I have made my morning ritual a priority once again, I am better able to take the good with the bad. While the consistency of my mornings may just be a way to satisfy my inner control freak, knowing the pattern of my mornings and being able to foster those little moments of predictable joy is something that I treasure. I treasure these moments because no matter what the day brings, I have the little bits of joy and positivity from that morning and will have the same the next morning.
